Living a moment in history

Last night around 8pm I stood in a local bar surrounded by young San Franciscans and experienced a moment in history. Not only did the Democratic party prevail, but in a way we have never before. Young Americans made this happen.

  • 136.6 million Americans voted yesterday a 64.1 turnout rate, which is the highest rate since 1908!
  • About 2/3 of the new voters this year were under 30
  • Voters between the ages of 18-29 made of 18% of the votes

Our millennial generation won this election- you and I, put Barack into office. I am proud not only to be an American, but to be a politically involved young adult. Having the first African American President, is a huge step for us as a country. However, as Barack himself said, this is only the beginning.

We are facing a country that is in need of attention and patriotism more than ever to be reconstructed. We are in the worst economical crisis in over a hundred years, and need to put a stop to the never ending war in Iraq, and begin to face all of the other challenges that have not been resolved.

As young and active U.S. citizens, we should be proud of taking our country this far. Now that we have a leader we can trust and feel enthusiastic about, we need to continue to use our power in numbers to support and be a part of this solution and change. Giving America back its strength and reputation will take time and dedication. This will only be accomplished by being proactive and doing our part in making this country great for future generations.

YES WE CAN!
